Corvids

I first noticed crows and ravens as a child growing up in Los Angeles. Later in life, I cultivated relationships with jays, crows, and ravens that lived near my dwellings. My doctoral research focused on crows, in particular, and the corvid-human relationship. Corvids are uniquely synanthropic (live near humans), and they are culturally co-evolved with humans. Beyond that, their intelligence is convergently evolved with primates. They have a lot of complex cognition packed into a small space by way of their unique brain structure. In photographing them and documenting their lives, I attempt to convey their very keen intelligence and ingenuity. If you look into the eyes of a crow, they will be looking back at you…perhaps with the very same sense of curiosity.
